Luther – historical reading for the future

By Prof. Dr. Volker Leppin, Universität Tübingen

Historically spoken, Martin Luther as a figure of the 16th century is far from modern problems and interests. And historical research must be eager to underline this distance: It shows the medieval and mystic background of Martin Luther, it detects the myths behind the story of the reformation, which make Luther an untouchable hero.

Volker Leppin will demonstrate the problems in finding the real historical Luther and place the reformer in his medieval context. But, the core question remains: How can Luther still not only be celebrated in our days, but more than this: How can he be an inspiring theologian for modern theology? The lecture will attempt to combine both: harsh historical contextualization and theological adaption for present times.
